2 Little Words, “Thank You” That Worked Marketing Magic for Us During Lockdown

In his classic best-seller, and ground breaking book, “How To Win Friends And Influence People”. Dale Carnegie in the second chapter entitled “The Big Secret of Dealing With People”, summed up the secret principle of how to retain customers: Give them honest and sincere appreciation.

Carnegie said ‘there is only one way to get anybody to do anything, such completing a monthly report, getting your expenses in on time, customers to place repeat orders with you; it is by making that person want to do it. How can you encourage customers to say good things about you on LinkedIn, Twitter, FaceBook, Instagram or any other social media communication platform and give you referrals? By giving them what all human beings crave: honest and sincere appreciation.

The Two Magic Words …. Thank You

The big secret of dealing with customers or staff is, do it with a spirit of appreciation. This is often overlooked and forgotten. Simply by saying "Thank You" consistently, personally and, above all, sincerely makes the world of difference and builds longterm relationships, increasing sales. These two words work marketing magic because customers want to feel important and appreciated.

Saying "Thank You" is an act of kindness, respect; besides my mother would describe it as basic manners. But don't say "Thank You" for the sake of flattery. Or like our cousins across the pond who sometimes say, ‘Have a nice day!’ and you feel it’s just something that is said, but they don’t really mean it. Your “Thank You” must be sincere. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "You can never say anything but what you are."

“Thank You" Promotes Referrals, and repeat business; and based on some customer feedback during COVID it has worked for us.

The uncertainty of referrals can be disconcerting. Can you control them? No. But you can influence them? Absolutely by sincerely saying Thanks to your customers!
