(Georgetown University hospital, Washington, DC, USA) reports that, “despite some of the progress in reducing the number of hysterectomies for benign conditions such as fibroids, with about a 10% reduction in the past decade, there is still 8 to 9 times the number of hysterectomies as UAEs for fibroids performed in the USA.”
Stewart et al, 2013. “The burden of uterine fibroids is even more extensive for African-American women compared to white women than previously reported. This disparity has real-world consequences and should set the agenda for the next generation of research. In the USA 49% of all hysterectomies are performed for bleeding, demonstrates an over reliance on hysterectomies.”
MDR is the Mother of all disruption for the Medical Device Industry, but will Brexit & UKCA be worse?
Any company that has been awarded the CE Mark by a UK notified body, will lose their accreditation immediately, their certificates will become void. However, the UK will continue to accept CE Marked products. How will medical device organisations prepare and respond to this mammoth change? How will the government promote the awareness to manufacturing companies, both in the UK and outside of the UK? Will our Prime Minister run his hands through his uncombed hair, smile broadly, and say, “We were only joking!”. Don’t worry Mr. Mainwaring your new independent mark will be assessed by, and issued by European cousins.

Whilst greater access to video conferencing technology has been the catalyst for some working practices during the global lock down, it is not the technology on its own that will create lasting disruption of Medical Device organisations and ultimately the patient experience.

The problem of our time is that our society is “liquid”, it has lost all of its reference points, and its ethical principles marked by centuries, broken down into decades of civilisation and understanding. Our future is a continuous state of emergency, and only the brave, who change, will survive. More significantly, those who change quickly, they will be the ones that create the future we call normal!
